                                                                        Introduction

Archives is an organized body of records created or received by Government agency, institutions, organization, family or individual and preserved by that agency etc. or its legitimate successors as evidence of its organization, functions, policies, decisions, procedures, operations or other activities or because of the information data contained therein. It is on the basis of records only that Government plans can be chalked out successfully. Archives provide material to write history and find facts of the written history.

Any type of record whether public, private or religious are the documentary proof of our deeds. We must remember our past deeds, follies and achievements to get ourselves prepared for the future. Records are the mirror of the past. History judges us by these records . Hence it is the duty of the Government as well as all individuals to take proper care of their records. The records are crucial to hold us accountable to our past deeds and provide basis for future programme and planning. According to Desmond Tutu “ We must remember our past so we do not repeat it”

After sometime it was realized that no specific attention could be paid towards the public and private records of the Divisions of Haryana state. So it was decided that Regional Repositories should be opened at Divisional level. Consequently in the year 1986 two Regional Repositories were opened at Hisar and Ambala. Thereafter with creation of two more divisions, two more Regional Repositories were opened at Gurgaon and Rohtak in the year 1997. Since then Gurgaon Division office is making a rapid progress. All the archival activities of the office are looked after by Assistant Director Archives who is also the head of the Division office.
